A one-time $4 favourite for the Brownlow, a foot injury appeared to have derailed Cripps’ season and his Brownlow Medal hopes. He’s now the fifth favourite for the award at $8 – and David Teague is the key to a Cripps Brownlow.
We’ve got him on 17 votes, but even greater on weighted average (purchase the Downlow on the Brownlow package for that leaderboard). That puts him within 4 votes of the leader.
Teague as caretaker coach is 3-2 since he jumped on board – and we know wins go a long way to winning Brownlows. Cripps has played in three of Teague’s five games – his first game he locked in 3 against the Lions, played injured against the Dogs and should poll in his return game in the Blues win over the Swans.
The Blues will win their fifth game this season when they face the Gold Coast this weekend. This screams of a 3-vote game for Cripps, which could even see him leading after Round 18. In 2018, Cripps had two 3-vote games (in both of Carlton’s two wins) – one of them was against the Suns where he had 37 disposals, 1 goal and 11 tackles tallying 173 Supercoach points.

After Carlton beat the Gold Coast, they’ll host the Crows and West Coast, before games against Richmond, St Kilda and Geelong. The way Teague is coaching, we think they’ll knock off the Saints and a decent chance to beat the Crows – giving the Blues 7 wins for the season; five more than last season.
Since 1980, only one player has won the Brownlow with less than that amount of wins – Kelvin Templeton winning with the Bulldogs winning 5 games. The Blues are about to achieve that this weekend, and with Cripps polling 20 votes in 2 wins last year, what’s he capable of with more wins in what is arguably a better year for him?
Last year he had 14 votes in losses and 6 in those two wins. From the three wins he’s played in this season, we have him on 6 votes. If Carlton can snag three more wins including this weekend, that tally gets to 12 at a minimum – 15 max. With 11 votes already accumulated from losses according to our predictions, and a count we’re anticipating to be lower than previous years, it appears Cripps will poll at a minimum 23 votes. With Dangerfield and Kelly taking votes off one another and Fyfe injured, get on Cripps tonight before he racks up three votes against a hapless Gold Coast.
